Trichomonas vaginalis
Trichomonas vaginalis is an almost exclusively sexually transmitted infection (STI’s) caused by trichomonas. It is usually found in the vagina or urethra of women or in the urethra in men.
Symptoms of trichomonas vaginalis
Women
- Up to 50% have no symptoms (asymptomatic)
- Vaginal discharge
- Vulval itching
- Pain during urination (dysuria)
- Offensive odour
- Occasionally low abdominal discomfort
Men
- 15 to 50% of men are asymptomatic who usually present as Sexual partners of infected women
- Urethral irritation
- Discharge and/or dysuria
- Urinary frequency
Diagnosis of trichomonas vaginalis

Treatment of trichomonas vaginalis
- A one off dose of antibiotics( which we can dispense onsite)
- Contacts should be traced and treated regardless of results
- Abstain from sex till follow up
- Screen for other STI/STD’s
